Passengers and crew aboard the cruise vessel MV Hondius remain stranded off Cape Verde after authorities denied the ship permission to dock following three deaths linked to a suspected hantavirus outbreak. The vessel, carrying 149 people from 23 nationalities, has been placed under strict isolation protocols. Operator Oceanwide Expeditions said passengers and crew are following enhanced hygiene measures and undergoing continuous medical monitoring. The cruise was travelling from Ushuaia to Cape Verde when the health emergency unfolded. Two people died on board, while a third died after disembarking earlier. One passenger is currently in intensive care in Johannesburg, and two others require urgent medical attention. Docking denied amid Health Concerns Cape Verde’s health authorities refused docking at the Port of Praia, citing public safety concerns. Officials stressed that preventing contact between passengers and residents was necessary to avoid any potential spread. According to the World Health Organization, the risk to the wider public remains low, though investigations are ongoing. Hantavirus, typically transmitted through rodents, has been confirmed in one case, while several others remain suspected. Efforts are underway to arrange medical evacuation, with Spain’s Canary Islands being considered as an alternative port for disembarkation and further screening, as uncertainty continues for those stranded at sea.
